A new home in South West Africa? Swiss emigration to Namibia, 1870–1946
Swiss Emigrants in (German) South West Africa: In this book, Sandra Romer traces the traces and fates of women and men who lived in present-day Namibia. Whether farmers, entrepreneurs, housewives and mothers, or veterinarians: the few Swiss who settled in the colony either saw themselves as members of the German-speaking colonial elite or, as individualists, sought a secluded expanse and independence in their sparsely populated new homeland. The author considers her study a contribution to Namibia's colonial settlement history and thus also outlines the careers of the second and third generation in South West Africa, a country of emigration that is rather atypical in Swiss migration history.
