Open Access @ BAB Publishing House
At the BAB Publishing House, we strongly support the widest possible dissemination of academic research. Therefore, we offer authors the option to publish their digital book edition as "Golden" Open Access, making it freely accessible to all readers immediately upon publication, alongside a print edition and instead of a commercial e-book purchase.
Open Access Publishing Services
Preparation and Formats
Preparation and Formats
We require only a simple Microsoft Word file from you. We then convert your manuscript into our professional publisher’s layout through a dedicated typesetting process, which ensures your content is securely archived for the future. Your book is produced in two main formats:
- A PDF with fixed pagination, fully searchable and bookmark-ready for optimal online reading.
- A high-quality printed edition, which we produce and distribute globally.
Digital Long-termArchiving
Digital Long-termArchiving
Our archiving agreement with docuteam guarantees the long-term preservation of our e-books, ensuring your digital publication remains permanently available.

We create comprehensive metadata, available as ONIX, MARC, and KBART files for maximum discoverability.

Our open access e-books receive the same extensive marketing and distribution services as our paid publications. We leverage these services to maximise content dissemination:
- Each OA book has its dedicated product page on our website.
- We announce new releases in our brochures, newsletters, and social media channels.
- Review copies are sent to relevant specialists and media experts
- We highlight individual publications, series, topics, programme areas, or open access collections through targeted campaigns.
Distribution and Visibility
Distribution and Visibility
To ensure broad visibility and accessibility, we actively promote the distribution of Open Access publications both locally and internationally. In cooperation with the non-profit service provider Thoth, we guarantee professional management and dissemination of your Open Access publication, including:
- Metadata management
- DOI registration and management
- Distribution to major platforms such as OAPEN Library, DOAB, Project MUSE, Google Books, ProQuest Ebook Central, EBSCO Host, Clarivate Web of Science Book Citation Index, and Jisc NBK

We apply the same rigorous peer review and editorial standards to Open Access books as to our print publications.
Costs & Financing
Costs & Financing
Publishing an academic work involves significant costs and represents an economic risk for the publisher. Each publication incurs individual production costs and expenses for services such as author advising, editorial support, professional typesetting, marketing and distribution, presentation at specialist conferences, and more. Additionally, there are our wide range of open access services.
We charge a publication processing fee based on these services. Print editions are usually produced at no extra cost. Once your proposal is accepted, we will provide you with an individually tailored estimate.
Publication costs are typically partially or fully covered by the author(s) or their sponsors, with the exact amount negotiated individually. Typical funding models include:
- Institutional support (e.g., universities)
- Library consortium crowdfunding (e.g., Opening the Future)
- Third-party funding (e.g., from a research grant).
As a not-for-profit publisher, our financial goal is sustainability—we ensure that our income covers expenses, and any surplus is reinvested to publish more books or to support authors without funding.
Therefore, we encourage authors—especially those with access to institutional funding—to seek financial support to cover the full fee. By doing so, they help us support other authors lacking similar funding opportunities, ensuring that excellent books can be published regardless of financial resources.
If funding is unavailable, BAB may in selected cases cover costs to ensure no high-quality book is excluded due to financial barriers.
Licensing & Copyright
Licensing & Copyright
All BAB Open Access publications use Creative Commons licenses. Authors choose their preferred license in accordance with their funding agencies, usually CC BY or CC BY-SA, which define how their work may be used.
