African Posters. A Catalogue of the Poster Collection in the Basler Afrika Bibliographien

This richly illustrated catalogue presents some 900 full-colour posters

from and on Southern Africa, with additions from West and North-Eastern Africa. It provides a representative cross-section of the BAB collection of several thousand African posters, mainly covering the 1970s to the present. The selection reveals the significance of posters in everyday African life as well as for historical research. The catalogue is envisaged as a reference work, and each illustrated poster is provided with available bibliographic data. The opening essay of the catalogue offers an introduction to posters as part of a visual history of Africa. This is followed by eight chapters (each with an introductory text) in which posters are grouped and considered thematically. The topics are:

  • liberation movements and exile
  • solidarity and Anti-Apartheid
  • elections
  • nation building
  • awareness and health
  • economy
  • knowledge, information, belief
  • leisure and pleasure

“On the one hand, the posters reproduced here could be used to expand on the history of the liberation and solidarity movements … On the other hand, they illustrate the way in which politics inspired art … This is a lovely book, produced with great care.”

William Beinart in Journal of Southern African Studies
