"Africa makes or breaks a man." Social behavior and political assessment of a colonial society: the example of the Swiss in Ghana (1945-1966)
By 1960, there were over 600 Swiss citizens in Ghana, more than in almost any other country in sub-Saharan Africa. The Swiss presence on the former Gold Coast dates back to the work of the Basel Mission, which had been active there since the 1820s and from whose ranks the Basel Trading Society emerged around 1865. This book describes the "Swiss colony" in Ghana and uses its example to examine white social behavior in a late and post-colonial context.
